How Theatre Colorado Began

The idea for Theatre Colorado grew out of a simple question: Where do adults go when they just want to keep doing theatre?

There are plenty of people who performed growing up and miss it, people who discovered theatre later in life, and people who simply want a creative outlet and a community. They have careers, families, and busy lives. They're not necessarily trying to make theatre their profession. They just don't want performing to become something they used to do.

But for adults, getting back onstage often means competing in auditions for a limited number of roles. Annette was looking for something different: a place where adults could participate in theatre as a hobby, build friendships, put on great shows, and keep performing without needing to earn their way into the room.

When she couldn't find quite what she was looking for, she decided to create it.

That idea became Theatre Colorado, a nonprofit community theatre where all skill levels are welcome and an audition is never required to participate. Auditions may be held for specific roles, but there will always be a place in the production for adults who simply want to be part of the show.

  • First of all, you’re probably better at this than you think!

    Theatre Colorado isn’t about showing up already polished. It’s about learning, growing, and making something together. Our creative team is here to help you figure out what you do well, build the skills you’re still working on, and give you opportunities to shine.

    You don’t have to be the strongest singer, dancer, or actor in the room. You just need to be willing to learn, put in the work, and support the people around you.

    So if the little voice in your head is telling you that you’re “not good enough” to do theatre, we’d really encourage you not to let that be the reason you don’t try.

  • Currently, members should be 18+ AND must be out of high school. We may have a need for child performers in the future and will cross that bridge at that time.

  • Absolutely. Theatre takes many people beyond the actors onstage. We will need volunteers interested in costumes, props, sets, stage management, front of house, marketing, photography, fundraising, and more.

  • Theatre Colorado is built around the idea that theatre can be a hobby, too. Adults can pay to join a sports league, take a dance class, or learn an instrument. We wanted to create that same kind of opportunity for adults who love performing.

    Your participation fee helps cover the cost of producing the show, including licensing, rehearsal and performance space, music, costumes, sets, props, and more. In return, you get something that's surprisingly hard to find as an adult: a place to sign up, be part of a production, and perform.

    Reduced-fee options are available because we don't want cost to keep someone offstage.

  • Absolutely. Theatre Colorado welcomes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We are committed to creating a respectful environment where everyone can participate and feel comfortable being themselves.

  • Absolutely! Many productions include ensemble roles, smaller roles, and even non-speaking roles. Let us know what you’re comfortable with, and we’ll help you find an opportunity that feels exciting without feeling overwhelming.

  • Theatre Colorado is a recreational community theatre, not a professional theatre company, so performers are not currently paid. Our productions are designed for adults who want to create, perform, meet new people, and enjoy theatre as part of a welcoming community.
