How Theatre Colorado Began

The idea for Theatre Colorado grew out of a simple question: Where do adults go when they just want to keep doing theatre?

There are plenty of people who performed growing up and miss it, people who discovered theatre later in life, and people who simply want a creative outlet and a community. They may have careers, families, and busy lives. They're not necessarily trying to make theatre their profession. They just don't want performing to become something they used to do.

After seeing the enormous amount of interest in local auditions, often for a relatively small number of roles, Annette started wondering what it would look like to create one more place for people to perform.

That idea became Theatre Colorado, a nonprofit community theatre built around great productions, meaningful friendships, and the belief that there's no age when you have to stop doing something you love.

About the Founder

Annette Hullender is a longtime theatre lover with experience performing, directing, music directing, and choreographing. While she loves being onstage, much of her passion for theatre comes from the process of bringing a production together, helping performers grow, shaping a show, and creating something as a group.

Outside of theatre, Annette is a Colorado business owner with experience building and managing a company and leading a team. Theatre Colorado brings those two parts of her life together: a love of creating theatre and the practical experience needed to build an organization from the ground up.

  • We plan to hold productions in the Aurora and southeast Denver metro area. Specific rehearsal and performance locations will be announced with each production.

  • We are currently building the organization and preparing for our first production. Join our email list and get ready to follow us on social media to be the first to hear about auditions, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming events.

  • Casting will depend on the size and needs of each production. Even when we cannot cast everyone, we hope to offer other ways to participate, including backstage, production, and volunteer opportunities. We will do our best to be as inclusive as possible and may consider double casting to ensure as many people as possible get to be a part of this.

  • Come anyway! Auditions can feel intimidating, especially when you’re trying theatre for the first time. We’ll explain what to expect, keep the environment supportive, and help you through the process. You don’t have to arrive feeling confident. That can come later. If you absolutely do not want to audition, send us a message and we’ll see what we can do!

  • Currently, members should be 18+. We may have a need for child performers in the future and will cross that bridge at that time.

  • Absolutely. Theatre takes many people beyond the actors onstage. We will need volunteers interested in costumes, props, sets, stage management, front of house, marketing, photography, fundraising, and more.

  • Absolutely. Theatre Colorado welcomes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We are committed to creating a respectful environment where everyone can participate and feel comfortable being themselves.

  • No! You do not need to be an amazing singer, dancer, or actor to get involved. Theatre Colorado is about learning, creating, and enjoying theatre with other adults. Bring your enthusiasm and willingness to try. We can work on the rest together.

  • Absolutely! Many productions include ensemble roles, smaller roles, and even non-speaking roles. Let us know what you’re comfortable with, and we’ll help you find an opportunity that feels exciting without feeling overwhelming.

  • Theatre Colorado is a recreational community theatre, not a professional theatre company, so performers are not currently paid. Our productions are designed for adults who want to create, perform, meet new people, and enjoy theatre as part of a welcoming community.
