The SantaLand Diaries thru December 24th, 2011

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) presents The SantaLand Diaries

The SantaLand Diaries
By Davis Sedaris, adapted by Joe Mantello
Back by popular demand!
November 30th – December 24th, 2011

*Due to adult content, SantaLand is not recommended for children under 13.

BETC returns once more to this hilarious and irreverent tale detailing Sedaris’ real-life experience of working as an Elf in Macy’s SantaLand. For those searching for the cure for the common Christmas show, look no further. This uproarious show has played to packed houses the last two years, so be sure to get your tickets early!

“[BETC’s SantaLand is] quite possibly the best Christmas-themed show.” – Boulder Weekly

“BETC’s version of SantaLand reaches out and tickles the Bad Santa that lives in many of us.” – Boulder Daily Camera

Producing Ensemble Director’s Comments: SantaLand is fast becoming a tradition in Boulder. We’ve literally been turning people away the last two years, so we felt it was only right to give them another shot at it. With Geoffrey Kent returning as our velvet-clad hero, it’s sure to be anything but a “Silent Night.”

Remaining Performance Dates and Times:

Wed, Dec 21st — 7:30pm
Thurs, Dec 22nd — 7:30pm
Fri, Dec 23rd — 7:30pm

Last Weekend for K2 at the Aurora Fox

K2 at the Aurora Fox

April 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m

From the Aurora Fox Press Release:

K2, the play, is a 75-minute harrowing tale of two long-time friends/mountain climbers (William Hahn and Jude Moran) who are stranded on a ledge at 27,000 feet. After an accident leaves one of the men with a severely broken leg, the two survive the night only to confront the fact that they have lost several pieces of important climbing equipment and a safe return to base camp seems unlikely. Their fight for survival spawns several discussions which expose the philosophical differences between the two men as they taunt and tease about the merits of each other’s lifestyle and face their own mortality.

About BETC:

The mission of the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) is to expose, to entertain, to educate, and to inspire our audiences with the powerful, transformational potential of theatre. BETC stages plays that chronicle the human condition. We target an audience of adults and young adults in Boulder County and surrounding areas through production of contemporary plays, regional and world premieres, and revisited classics. Through our professional theatrical productions, we alter our community’s cultural perceptions and provoke discussion beyond theatre’s boundaries.

BETC arose in 2005 as Oddball Players with our inaugural production, An Evening of Plays. In our first full season as BETC, we presented two productions: Anouilh’s Antigone, and two one-acts by Tony and Pulitzer winner John Patrick Shanley, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and Savage in Limbo. Additionally, we presented Week #22 of the world premiere of Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 Days / 365 Plays.

Season 2 featured Tennessee Williams’ American masterpiece, The Glass Menagerie, the austere and thought provoking Copenhagen by Michael Frayn, and the madcap, sidesplitting comedy, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged). Our production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea was honored with a 2007 Denver Post Ovation award nomination for Best Drama, and Complete Works was nominated for the 2008 Ovation Best Comedy Award.

Season 3 began with the Regional Premiere of Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig and continued with Stop Kiss by Diana Son. The season concluded with the World Premiere of Morisot Reclining by acclaimed local playwright, William C. Kovacsik. Morisot Reclining was recognized with a Best New Play Nomination as part of the 2009 Colorado Theatre Guild Henry Awards and Denver Post Ovation Awards.

Season 4 kicked off with the Regional Premiere of Cormac McCarthy’s haunting play, The Sunset Limited followed by our first holiday production, The SantaLand Diaries by David Sedaris. Last season closed with The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl. The Clean House received awards for Best Actress in a Comedy and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy from Boulder’s Daily Camera.

Season Six opened with the Tony and Pulitzer award-winning drama, Doubt, by John Patrick Shanley and was followed by a remount of The SantaLand Diaries.

Transformation, mime, and dance are the basis of the “Story Theatre” method. Story Theatre improvises plays from stories, myths, folk tales, and legends, each told with a lean production style. All the trappings are created by the actors with their bodies and voices. The no-frills storytelling creates some evocative effects.

The Aurora Fox will present the Regional Premiere of Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury October 1-31, 2010 on the Aurora Fox Mainstage (Fridays – October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 –at 7:30 p.m./
Saturdays – October 2**, 9, 16, 23, 30 at 7:30 p.m./Sundays – October 10, 17, 24, 31 at 2:00 p.m.). Tickets are $24 for adults, $20 for students/seniors and $18 for groups of 10 or more. Call 303-739-1970 or visit www.AuroraFox.org to make reservations.

Author Ray Bradbury adapted his award-winning novel into this live fantasy thriller which explores the conflicting natures of good and evil, modesty and vanity, need and want. In this masterwork, two 13-year old boys (played by Andrew Fisk and Miles Goeglein), rebelling against the constraints of youth, experience a harrowing adventure when a nightmarish traveling carnival comes to their Midwestern town just in time for Halloween. The carnival’s leader is the mysterious “Mr. Dark” (Jude Moran) who bears a tattoo for each person he has lured into a deadly devotion to the circus. Mr. Dark’s malevolent presence is countered by that of Will’s father (James Nantz), who fearlessly battles evil forces to save the souls of the impressionable teens.

If ever there was a story that cuts across genres, Something Wicked This Way Comes is it. By turns a fable, a dark fantasy, a coming-of-age tale, it is also one of the best works of literature produced by an American writer. It has influenced everyone from Stephen King to Stan Lee to Alice Cooper and many other creative minds in different artistic genres. It is a story to be experienced by youngsters aching to reach adulthood and seasoned grown-ups who remember the sweeter, simpler times of youth. This tale about the year that Halloween came a week early to a small town will certainly not be forgotten by anyone who sees it live!
Executive Producer/Director, Charles Packard and Projection/Sound Artist, El Armstrong had the privilege of meeting with 92-year old Bradbury in his Los Angeles home this summer. He confirmed many of the “between the lines” ideas they had culled from the novel and reacted excitedly when they explained their vision for The Aurora Fox stage production.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is directed by Charles Dean Packard with Scenic Design by Charles Dean Packard, Sound and Projections by El Armstrong, Lighting by Jen Orf, Costumes by Sharon McClaury, Properties by Katerina Niemisto, and Stage Management by Eric Veik.
