“Black Stockings” is a Brechtian styled morality play about sex and war. Set in a brothel in East Manchester, England, two sex workers use their trade as a measuring stick for the immorality of war. Donna and Trish have the audience laughing as they tell stories about their lives, until Trish reveals the true nature of her relationship with her Granddad, who was a decorated WWII bomber pilot. The victims of war are not always immediate, or easily identifiable. John Moore gave this production a 3 star review when produced last year. “You should skip “Black Stockings” if you can’t handle profanity or anatomically correct blow-up dolls. You should go if you want to see an age-old story that suggests war crimes are not always committed on foreign soil.” How do you define morality?

The Bard and his bros are coming to South Broadway on October 21st in Spark Theater’s Two Gentlemen of Verona. Director Michael Emmitt has put on modern day Colorado twist on this comic tale of love, friendship and beer. Emmitt says updating the story to current day Colorado was a no-brainer because “ The two main characters, Valentine and Proteus, reminded me of frat boys. There’s just something about the way they talk and live their lives that feels like local college dudes you see at DU or in Boulder. Plus the update seemed like an interesting way to poke fun at that culture while making Shakespeare more lively.” Two Gentlemen of Verona is believed to be written in 1591 and is one of Shakespeare’s earliest works but Emmitt says the story is “accessible and relatable” for modern audiences. “The language in Two Gents is lighter and more comedic than in his later work. First timers to Shakespeare will be able to follow the story while fans will get to see this rarely staged classic in a whole new light.”

Two Gentlemen of Verona opens on October 21st and runs through November 19th at Spark Theater. Tickets for Thursday performances are just $10 while Friday and Saturday shows are $20. For more information, visit sparktheater.org or call (720)346-7396

‘Caryl Churchill’s magnificent [...] play only lasts an hour but contains more drama, and more ideas,
than most writers manage in a dozen full-length works’ — The Daily Telegraph

(Denver, CO) Saturday, May 14th, Curious Theatre Company opens the “fiendishly clever”* play A NUMBER by Caryl Churchill. *Washington Post

In Churchill’s taut one-hour drama, Bernard (Timothy McCracken), who believes himself to be the only child of Salter (John Hutton), discovers he is but one of “a number” of his father’s many sons- his cloned counterparts.

John Hutton and Timothy McCracken - Photo by Michael Ensminger

Churchill, “the greatest living English language playwright” according to Pulitzer-winner Tony Kushner, pushes the frontiers of the enduring human question of nature vs. nurture. “We’ve got ninety-nine percent the same genes as any other person,” one of Salter’s sons proclaims. “We’ve got ninety percent the same genes as a chimpanzee. We’ve got thirty percent the same as a lettuce.”

The play premiered at The Royal Court Theatre in London in September, 2002, six years after Dolly (the sheep) leaped to fame as the first cloned mammal. In 2004, A NUMBER made its American debut at the New York Theatre Workshop in a production starring Sam Shepard and Dallas Roberts. Curious’ production is the first in the Rocky Mountain region.

John Hutton, an 18-year audience favorite at the Denver Center Theatre Company, has appeared previously at Curious in AN ALMOST HOLY PICTURE and FICTION (for which he won a Best of Westword award). Fans of Another World will remember Hutton as Peter Love.

Presents
An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf
By Michael Hollinger
Directed by Rebecca Remaly

A Regional Premiere from the author of Opus and Red Herring!
On one hot July night in 1961, the staff of the Café du Grand Boeuf awaits the imminent arrival of Victor, the Café’s owner and sole patron. But when Monsieur returns from the bullfights in Madrid, he brings with him news that sends his adoring staff into a race to save their jobs….and their master’s life. A “comic tragedy in seven courses” celebrating the joys of food, sex, bullfighting and the collected works of Ernest Hemingway.

“An absurdist tragicomedy…that manages to pay homage to Hemingway and Beckett in an…often hilarious existential romp.” —Boston Globe

Transformation, mime, and dance are the basis of the “Story Theatre” method. Story Theatre improvises plays from stories, myths, folk tales, and legends, each told with a lean production style. All the trappings are created by the actors with their bodies and voices.

In an effort to further key Business and Arts partnerships paramount to keeping the arts accessible to all members of the community, Stapleton MCA and The Aurora Fox will present the Regional Premiere of Happy Days – A New Musical by Garry Marshall September 18th and 25th at 6:00pm and 19th and 26th at 4:00pm as part of Stapleton’s new Theatre on the Green series on the lawn at Founder’s Green.

Goodbye gray skies, hello blue! Happy days are here again with Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and the unforgettable “king of cool” Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli. Based on the hit Paramount Pictures’ television series, Happy Days – A New Musical reintroduces one of America’s best loved families, the Cunninghams, and the days of 1959 Milwaukee complete with varsity sweaters, hula hoops, motorcycles and jukebox sock-hoppin’.

The famed drive-in malt shop and number one hang-out, Arnold’s (complete with its signature spinning “A” on the roof), is in danger of demolition, so the gang teams up to save it with a dance contest and a tv-worthy wrestling match featuring none other than Fonzie, himself. This perfectly family-friendly musical will have the audience rockin’ and rollin’ all week long!

Admission is FREE to the general public. So end your summer with a be-boppin’ bang! Pack a picnic, grab the kids and a blanket and head on over to Stapleton’s outdoor theatre for a fun ride back to the good ol’ days. Located at 29th and Quebec on the Green. No reservations necessary.

Happy Days – A New Family Musical is directed by Pam Clifton with Scenic Design by Charles Dean Packard, Lighting by Jen Orf, Costumes by Erin Leonard, Properties by Lindsay Sullivan, and Stage Management by Paul Behrhorst. Motorcycles provided by Erico Motorsports.

The Stapleton MCA is a 501(c) 4 non-profit community development organization whose mission it is to create and sustain a sense of community within Stapleton through comprehensive parks and recreation management, ongoing community event and cultural programming, and the long-term operation and sustainment of community facilities and assets. The Stapleton MCA is responsible for all property owned by the Park Creek Metropolitan District which includes community pools, town greens, neighborhood parks, pedestrian paths, and parkways.
