Last Weekend for K2 at the Aurora Fox

K2, the play, is a 75-minute harrowing tale of two long-time friends/mountain climbers (William Hahn and Jude Moran) who are stranded on a ledge at 27,000 feet. After an accident leaves one of the men with a severely broken leg, the two survive the night only to confront the fact that they have lost several pieces of important climbing equipment and a safe return to base camp seems unlikely. Their fight for survival spawns several discussions which expose the philosophical differences between the two men as they taunt and tease about the merits of each other’s lifestyle and face their own mortality.

Lots going on in local theater right now! There are a few things I’d like to highlight today, so here goes:

Paragon Theatre is hosting a FREE staged reading of RACE RELATIONS by Carrie Printz on May 18. This FREE reading will take place Monday, May 18th at 7:00 PM at The Crossroads Theater, 2590 Washington Street.

At the Denver Victorian Playhouse through June 27 is The Fantasticks directed by Sarah Roshan.

The Who’s TOMMY. ONE NIGHT ONLY!

Vintage Theater’s latest production is Kimberly Akimbo, directed by Bernie Cardell, running through June 14 Starring Gene Kato (in his last performance in Denver before taking Houston by storm), Janelle Christie, Libby Rife, Michael Hawthorne and Judy Phelan-Hill as Kimberly.

The new Evolution Theatre Company opens its first production, Altar Boyz, this weekend on May 22. The show runs May 22 – June 28, 2009 at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret.

CELEBRATIONWORKS Theatre Ensemble currently seeks production ready 10-15 minute unique plays in the following genres: comedy, ghost stories, paranormal, supernatural, sci/fi, (UFOs, aliens), inspirational, metaphysical, social awareness, family and holiday-theme, with off-beat storylines and provocative, multi-cultural, multi-racial, varied age characters for consideration for upcoming 2009, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Holiday productions. Last Weekend for The Ten Buddhist Tales at the Bug

A thrill-seeking Guru enlists the help of the Bearded Lady and her deranged theatre troupe to expand Buddhism for a western audience in the Department of Redundancy Department’s (DRD) ‘Ten Buddhist Tales’. As the Guru wallows deliciously deeper into their psychoses, the theatre freaks attain their own epiphanies, and find their ducks.

“We think that’s the plot of the play,” says director of directing Antoine Valot, “and that’s a little distressing because the script we wrote wasn’t supposed to have a plot.”

This avant-garde, ecstatic, freakish play is the first major production by a group born of the Bug Theatre’s long-running, genre-defying Freak Train program, where randomness blossoms. The DRD honors its freakish roots in a show that’s wild, raunchy, bloody, and above all wild, raunchy, and bloody. Fittingly, the show premieres on Friday the 13th of March and runs through Sunday May 5th.

“This play is to the Magna Carta what a carwash is to a banana peel, ” says Kenn Penn, the DRD’s resident-artist-in-residence, “It is not recommended for children.”
